One thing that might make a difference is that I'm using VFP 3, which was introduced right about the time Microsoft was making the Win 3.1/95 transition. But obviously, it's not working. Thanks for your explanation of Win32S - quite interesting.

VFP3 will run under Win32S, but none of the later versions. And some functionality, like ActiveX components, won't be usable, not because VFP3 can't do it but because the OS can't.

>This project I'm doing is actually quite specialized - it's only going to be used on one computer for a 911 display terminal. As such, I'd like the terminal to be as simple as possible...like a 486 with Win 3.1. 99% of the machines I develop "normal" stuff for are running Win9x, but this ONE app I'd like to stick with 3.1 if possible.

It'll work, but you won't be able to run much more than Solitaire, and even that won't run quickly. Remember, MS originally stated that the minimum hardware was 4MB and a 386SX processor.

OTOH, with memory prices where they are now, why not upgrade the box to 16MB of RAM? Minimal cost, and unless it's an incredibly ancient machine that won't accept 4MB 30 pin SIMMs, you should be able to upgrade for < $50.

For that matter, a new 486 or Pentium motherboard with 16MB of RAM and the current bottom of the line processor for them (Something like AMD's 133MHz 486-compatible processor for the 486 board, or an old surplus P-100 (I can't find a Pentium compatible that runs at less than 200MHz at retail today)) should be purchasable for under $100, with a significantly faster processor than a 486/33 in all cases. Standard ISA cards and devices should be able to be moved to a newer board, as hsould drives and the like. There's a point where the cost of making adjustments to allow for an old machine will cost more than the cost of a simple hardware upgrade; this sure sounds like one of them!
