And LOTS of other things. The network client may hold the write at the station even after the request if the network is busy or its been told to perform write caching of network data; the server probably has a delayed write strategy in software of its own, and it may schedule pending writes to take advantage of the relative head position of the read/write head on the disk The drive controller may as you mention, buffer the write to the drive, and today, most drives have their own on-drive buffer
