What I'm really looking for is the underlying reason why the problem is happening so that I can correct it rather than work around it.
Besides, I take advantage of the fact that the dot-matrix printer can print in a bit-mapped mode to get a wider variety of fonts. Printing to an ASCII file eliminates my ability to control what's printed.
