You've put your finger directly on the paradox: Times when you need the progress counter the worst are just the times when you don't want anything at all slowing down the index process.

Unfortunately, what can you do when you have a 2 million records table that must be indexed: it often takes 2 minutes before completion! You need to show the progression!
