But I suggest you tell them a backup. In my case I couldn't recover it on the table itself so did an export to ascii, create the table and indexes from scratch and append.

I thought corruption of the table or its index first as well. I've run into this a few times, especially with network apps that are processing when the server or workstation crashes. I was going to take a copy of his data to see if I could salvage the table when he tried the restart and the problem went away. This is what really has me baffled because if corruption is the case this shouldn't be able to resolve the situation ever. The users data is regularly backed up so no problem there.

I'm going to run a scandisk and defrag on his machine and see what that turns up. Do you know of any utilities that can check for things like faulty RAM?
