I'd go the way I learned in school myself...
C then move to C++
C teaches you the concepts of programming: functions, parameters, recursion, etc. Then, C++ brings you into the world of OOP. In CEGEP (betweem HS and university, only in Quebec), they started by Pascal (pretty good, but it was on a Mac with Think Pascal). Could be an alternative route: Pascal then Delphi for knowledge of RAD. Of course, pascal or C in DOS mode. I figure you have to know where you come from to know where you're going.
