I took a quick peek at the samba docs and found:
share modes
...
This option gives full share compatibility and enabled by default.
You should *NEVER* turn this parameter off as many Windows applications will break if you do so.
Default: share modes = yes
Check /user/local/samba/lib/smb.conf (or where ever it is) and see if someone was "helpful" and turned if off.
If that dosn't help, either e-mail or post the whole config file. I will need to know which version you are running, I think some of the older ones had different defaults.
