About all I can say is that it is a solution and thank goodness large hard drives are relatively cheap these days. I don't necessarily think it's the best solution however. My take is that the underlying problem is caused by either modifying the public interface without taking the old interface into account, or modifying the underlying functionality of existing functions. Both are bad practices, whether working with a DLL function or a VFP class.
