>>Well, if anyone wants to see how Intel is going after AMD, and making us all regret buying our systems too soon, check out D-Day for Intel's Pentium III - 15 new processors, in speeds from 500-733MHz, at maddeningly low prices....

Yeah, AMD does like to keep Intel in dust :) I'm glad I'll upgrade my AMD K6-2-333 to an Athlon 500 soon. About +10% lower price for 2-10% faster CPU but that's something I hate Turkey market and AMD. Athlon 700 is out and AMD kindly sends its news regularly to my desktop but I really struggle to find and buy an Athlon here. OTOH PIIIs are everywhere. From point of promotions AMD is like VFP, red headed step child of CPU market :) (Maybe that attracts me :=)

It's more than just a CPU - I think you're probably looking at a new motherboard and memory for the Athlon (OTOH, the Coppermine PIIIs need a new chipset and memory as well), while the newer Celerons will fit into Socket 370 and many Slot1 systems with a Socket370-Slot1 adapter.

I think sysdoc.pair.com, AKA Tom's Hardware Page, is about as level-headed and realistic a perspective of the hardware market today on the web. He points out that the Athlon is more cost-effective, faster when compared at identical clock speeds, and destined to not take over the market in spite of being a superior product in many ways...Intel can kill AMD by selling their product line at extremely low margin, or even below cost of manufacture if push comes to shove, and AMD, already in the hole for a big chunk of cash, has no choice but to drop their prices and lose more money, hoping that they can convince the corporate buyer to go AMD. So they can just roll over and play dead, or continue bleeding themselves to death until forced out of the market by their sockholders.
