I think this is part of my confusion. I have been thinking that components are just a part of a whole (like you said), but thought maybe there was a special meaning in VFP, which prompted this thread.

In message#284585 and message#284567 a component (in the VFP sense) was defined as a COM Server.

I was also mistakenly thinking of components as middle tier business objects, which I've since learned is incorrect.
