www.corpsys.com - they've got some Quantum DLTs at a good price. For me, DDS-3 DAT costs 1/3 what the DAT drive does, the media is cheaper, and I can probably afford the next step up to DDS-4 if the drive dies or my storage needs increase.
Windows NT Systems did a nice overview of backup technologies for small-to-mid scale network environments back around the end of the summer, and I think they've got the text at least on-line at
www.ntsystems.com - I can dig out the magazine from the large stack of publications moved from the living room this morning if you need an issue number to order reprints.

>Thanks for the offer! The next step for me is to build a rack mounted server to put that tape drive into. *g* I expect to do that in about 3-4 months if all goes according to plan. No reason to put yourself out but I
sure do appreciate the offer!>
www.dirtcheapdrives.com is a good source for the rack mount hardware, both drive and primary system enclosures, and I've got reasonably good sources for PC Power and Cooling stuff if you've got a small fortune to spend...
One temptation for yourself - $695 for a refurbished Quantum 15-30GB DLT in an external enclosure, rather than the $1800-1900 for a new 20-40GB drive, is my idea of a good price. You can get a 1 year or 6 year warranty on the refurb, and CSC has been around long enough to believe they'll still be open for business in 6 years. They also have refurbed Archive DDS-2 DAT autoloaders for cheap (about $400 refurbed), but I'm not sold on the mechanical reliability of the cheap autoloader mechanism in the 4596NP. My last purchase for myself was the raw HP 1554 DDS-3 drive for about $800 from Dirt Cheap Drives.
As to digging out the magazine, I was held at gunpoint and forced to go through the stacks of mags and papers in the living room yesterday, so it'd be easier to find now while the mess is localized and semi-organized.
