I might have run into something similar between a HP Deskjet 340 and a Xerox Docuprint P8. If the printable area on a page is not big enough, it might fill the field that is cut off with astericks. That would explain why it works on one printer but not the other. Try making the field smaller, or make room by making another field on the page smaller...
