Hi Michael, Ed

Here's thanks to you and the others for the help.

I copied the "Show Desktop" shortcut from another pc's "c:\windows\app...", folder and installed it on my pc and it now works a.o.k.

Now I've run into another issue with a new Compaq PC, in that it will not shut down properly, and it appears to be related to the "active desktop component"

Here's what a friend tells me...

"Well, Jim, I have seen this problem before, with Internet explorer 4.0 or
later on any windows 9x machine. The problem seems to be the active desktop
component. When installed the computer behaves this way (locking up on
shutdown). A work around is logging off the network and not logging back in
before shutdown. The other fix was to remove the Desktop component. This
had become such a regular occurrence at one point that Microsoft actually
added a "remove desktop component" option to the uninstall options of
Internet Explorer 4.0. However Windows 98 comes with this component built
in. So I haven't heard of a work around for Win 98, other than logging out
before shutting down. There may be new info on this on Microsoft's web-site
since the last time I checked, so it may be worth looking at again."

We purchased six (6) new Compaqs, all identical, but only one has this problem.

If we log off the network, it shuts off automatically, otherwise it hangs, go figure.
