I have the very same trouble myself, I have not checked yet,
but I wonder if the doc ole object has a property for data
file pointing.

It Names and Creates the new Word Document just fine and has the field names inserted, but later in the automation when it does a activedocument.mailmerge.execute, it says it can't do it because the document doesn't have a datasource associated with it.
