I don't think he said he was using 2.6. He said he has been using since 2.6 and kept up with every new version. I would assume this means he has 5.0a.

Even though it is a couple of versions behind, the concepts and 90%+ of the samples still apply. I believe that his newest book (I forget the title) is the updated verion of the earlier one.
