I spoke with the folks at Henzenwerke and they said it was because of cost over-runs that they opted on to include the CD. The book's production costs were originally spec'ed out based on about 900 pages....the book ended up almost twice that size which drove production costs up dramatically...so to meet budget there were 3 choices....reduce the book to 900 pages, boost the price to cover the change, or drop the CD.
I'd opt for the choice they made....I like all the extra pages.

>Does anybody else here think it's just a bit unfair that the Hacker's Guide refers constantly to a CD, but none is shipped through Henzenwerke and Digital River?

>I have a real problem with this. Only in one small place at the back of the book do they talk about the 'benefits' of downlading vs. a CD. In my opinion, it's the height of cheapness disguised as 'giving you the latest info'.

>If they really feel thatr way, send a CD, then offer patches on the Website. I find it particularly annoying that they didn't even bother excising the references to the 'CD' in the book. I have to take the download time and effort to get something that should have shipped with the book. For the cost of the book (probably the most expensive one I've ever bought), I don't think it's too much to expect the CD mentioned in the book.
