>Thanks for the advice... I don't need to worry a lot about the user's data entry interface, as the data is collected electronically and placed in fox tables.. I was just looking to enhance some of the reporting functionality that I have in my applicaation. I don't think I could justify spending a lot of money as it is basically , average, standard deviaion and test for normallcy that I would need. I had a few statistics courses years ago.. <bg> but I was wondering what was out there.
You could add Median & Mode, Min & Max, if you want to look more impressive. But I would dump the Normality part unless you really need it for some reason, because:
A good test for Normality is rather difficult without software like SAS. It's basically a hypothesis test with the NULL side being that the data is a random sample from a normal distribution, that part is simple enough. However, the computations are more obscure: if the # of sample observations is less than 50, something called a Shapiro-Walk statistic is computed; if greater than 50, something called a Kolomogorov D-statistic is computed, and these are compared with values from lookup tables for the test.
Now you see why we use pre-fab software for the job :)
