Both machines have identical 17" monitors at 1024x768 resolution with Small Fonts and the

? space(10) + 'A'
? replicate('A',11)

test showed the fonts were not being mapped to something else.

I did note, however that the Arial font on the well behaved machine is version 2.45 and version 2.76 on the misbehaving one. I replaced the 2.76 with the 2.45 version and it works! Seems there is a difference in the fonts or at least in how VFP treats them.
