My guess is that something is being sent to the printer via the spooler to reset the pritner when you SET PRINTER TO and release the job stream. My gut reaction is not to treat it as a printer, but as a stream device, especially if the device is 'owned' by one instance of the app. If not, I'd look at a COM server to handle the stream device, and talk to the COM server to send stuff to the stream device. The essense here is it is not being treated as a GDI device.
