Hi Perry,
>I visited Compuserve for the first time in ages yesterday. I noticed your reply to someone who was comparing AFP to Web Connection. Do you still find CSI useful?
That was my first visit in a few months, and I've been there only 3 or 4 times in the past two years.
>1) There still seemed to be a substantial amount of 2.6 traffic there. The biggest thread I saw was because a developer of a 2.6 package was peeved when someone advised a potential client that his package was developed with out of date and no longer supported tools. He didn't seem to be too interested in learning VFP.
I didn't see that one.
>2) There seemed to be much more AFP threads there rather than Web Connection. Christof mentioned somewhere that one of his clients is the developer of AFP. I don't know if thats the reason or not.
That was *very* noticable, maybe because one of the more verbose posters was pushing AFP with every post about web apps, like I push WC with every post about web apps. I don't think it's due to Christof -- just not many WC developers hanging out there. The
www.west-wind.com/wwthreads support site is extremely active and, as you noted, the CIS site is way down on traffic compared to a few years ago.
>3) Discussions in general on Compuserve seem to be behind the times from here. I.E. No threads on ADO. No discussions of XML, DHTML, etc.
Noticed that, also. I didn't have very long to visit, but I noticed that there were several "advanced" questions with either no answers, shallow answers, or limited responses. Not too many lengthy threads on practical application of newer technologies.
>Am I wrong in the evaluation of their technical content, or did I miss something?
I think what is missing is the dynamic of *size* that you get here. Ask a clearly-stated question here from beginner level to advanced, and within a few hours (certainly within 24 hours) you'll have a clear answer (usually confirmed by two or more people), or you'll be in the beginning stages of a lively debate. :-)
Anyone with time on your hands could do some great community service by dropping in on the CIS forums and answering questions now and then.
