This is the expected behaviour.
If the field is fully selected when you start typing, the you replace
all of the selected text. This is what you want.
If the field is not selected, then you simply add to what's already
there. For example, in a text box if you want to change "Hello" to
"Hello World", you move to the end of "Hello" and type " World". The
same thing happens here, just that it's interpreted differently, since
it's a numeric field.
