I was thinking aloud with insufficient precision, sorry. More of a suggestion than a question though.
Having only this week stepped into the world of replacing the standard grid column headers and text cells I wondered whether this problem might be a suitable contender. The column with that display requirement would have the textbox replaced with a custom control that displayed the appropriate string based on the underlying data value. Or maybe I don't yet understand what you can / can't do with custom grid cells?
