That's what I thought too, but this is definitely wrong. I looked at a whole group of machines that use Outlook all day long, and the MAPI progids are nowhere to be found in the registry.

I tried both of these. I first copied MSMAPI32.ocx manually to the system folder and registered it with RegSvr32, and got the error I reported in my first message. I then attempted to let VFP install it using step 2 in the setup wizard, and got the same message.

This is a new one on me...
