So further to my reply, you can either use the numbers or (mor sensibly in my opinion) define them as constants and use the constants in code:
MAIL_CONNECT 0
#DEFINE MAIL_HELO 1
#DEFINE MAIL_FROM 2
#DEFINE MAIL_RCPTTO 3
#DEFINE MAIL_DATA 4
#DEFINE MAIL_DOT 5
#DEFINE MAIL_QUIT 6
You can put these definitions in the source file/s or (preferably) put them in a header file and
#INCLUDE the header file.
