As Larry mentioned computer names are unique in a given NT domain. If somebody already logged on to domain with your computer name you cannot logon (or at least I couldn't succeed to do so).
You could query more specific things like NIC address but unfortunately it's not supported on nonNT computers. In Novell and Fox2x I was querying all stations flawlessly (provided you have administrator rights) using Novell services as you say and it was lovely :)
