I would add that color and appearence are NOT unimportant. Users have to stare at the damn thing many hours a day.

And the suggestions about having your boss help you select bmps and colors are right on. Obviously she has a vision of what it should look like. Instead of trying to read her mind, get her to help pick exact colors and bmps.
