>Be sure to check Compac's web site for any updates for your computer. According to the trade press, Compac has had some defects in the computers it sells and has been posting fixes on its web site.

>I've ditched Norton Systemwork's (3.0) Crashguard and replaced it with a wonderful $49.95 program called WinFix. Visit http://www.winfix.com to get details. You can purchase and download the software from the site. After installing WinFix, Windows 98SE actually went two or three weeks without a blue screen crash (I finally managed to get one by doing something really stupid). Otherwise, any program errors have been easily recovered from simply by restarting the application without restarting Windows 98SE. WinFix runs at the DOS level and does not make any changes in Windows itself. Check it out.

Thanks - I'm back in pretty good shape now, after another SE install. This time I made sure to totally shut off the AV, rather than simply disabling it with a right-click. I think what happens is that after the first SE install Restart, the AV starts back up again and fouls the install up. You have to actually go in and set it not to start at all until the install is completed.

So, in my case McAfee/NA was the apparent culprit - but this could be true for any AV, I imagine.

I will check the Compaq site for updates - I had it update auto-checking at first, but it grew irritating so I disabled it and haven't checked recently. I'll keep the Winfix in mind, if I start having any crashes again. So far it's running great again, just like new.
