Why on Earth would you wan't a spell checker built into the OS?
As for the additional $300, almost nobody pays that much for Office. Just about anything qualifies for a competitive upgrade. If one pays more than $150 for the whole suite, they are not shopping all that well. Also, most new PC's come bundled with Office. Finally, if they don't have Word, and it has been identified they need spell checking capabilities, I'll bury the cost of Word into the quote. I guarantee you that in relation to the total cost of the project, the cost of Word per workstation will not be significant.
Of course, if the user does not want Word, and instead, a third-party spell checking solution will work, that is the way I will go, so long as it meets the requirements. This however, will only b e 1-2 % of the time. I will take my chances with the other 98-99% of the world...< bg >...
>>I would then say that you and your customers are in the minority. Most folks have Word and the rest of office.

>I know, so you should always have a backup spell checker if Word isn't avaiable. They've already paid for the app witht eh Spelling feature, would that mean they need to dish another $300 bucks to use it?

>I've had this discussion before with Erik Moore, and I always end up saying, well, why isn't something like that built into the OS? Isn't that what an OS is there for, so we can use standard tools at its disposal? I don't think telling you what I want in Windows will get it, just my $.02
