With an abnormal shutdown, all bets are off. The system could be in the midst of a write, for example. You could add a FLUSH command prior to closing the table to force the updates, but that happens autmatically with USE and CLOSE DATABASES.

In regards to the Novell issue, it seemed especially prevelant when the user PACKed a table. In doing so research, the areas effected seem to be related to the deleted records and/or the location of the record pointer.
