Christof,

>>I don't know if this is practical or not, but can't Advisor pay someone externalk a few bucks to spot check articles and tips before they are published?

>Actually that's the job of the Contributing Editor, if the article was written by one, and of the Editor/Technical Editor, if it has been written by someone else. In this case it seems like an oversight, so I can't speak for others, of course.

That's amazing to me. In our tiny little weekly newspaper business, we *always* had someone other than the writer do the proofreading and cross-checking of facts. Sure, the writers would *also* check their own articles, but never the writer alone.

Maybe technical publications are not as open to lawsuits if they get the facts wrong, but we were very aware of the importance of undistorted, verifiable truth and accuracy. Trusting the writer to check everything is a recipe for problems, no matter who the writer is.
