Assuming that your home PC is Win9x, that OS is vulnerable to low resource conditions, since it has several small heaps that can run low if you're running several programs at once. This problem does not exist under Windows NT.
One possibility is that it may look like all the programs are closed, but there may still be ODBC drivers, Jet for Access etc. left running in the background. Reboot your machine, then before starting the process use Ctrl-Alt-Del and examine the list of running tasks. Do it again after you've run and "closed" your process, and see if anything has been left running that wasn't there when you first started your machine.
