Just a guess, but it may be the end-of-file marker. You could try opening the file created by VFP and a copy "modified" by Notepad in a hex editor and checking the last character to see what it is in each case. I don't know off-hand what the different characters would be between the two methods of creation, perhaps someone who knows will jump in.
