To create the compound index I had to convert an integer and a date field into strings in order to concatenate them. I converted the integer index in the parent table to a string as well, but this didn't help. Any other ideas?

I have had some luck with a similar situation. I left the parent/child relation intact, then in the refresh of the form do a SET ORDER TO TAG of the compound child index, then call the grid's refresh. Don't know of any ill effects yet, but YMMV.
