I set the order to the compound index in the form's refresh event, but this seems to break the connection between the parent and child tables. If I'm sitting on the parent table the grid is empty, and if I'm focused on the child table the grid shows every record in the table, regardless of the parent record.
I then gave the RelationalExpr and ChildOrder properties every possible combination of indexes, hoping to stumble on one that would work with your suggestion, but none did.

With views ruled out (see my reply to Barbara Peisch) it looks like I'm stuck using some kind of hokey temporary table as the grid's datasource.
