For your demo, cheat a little, try and make all the files readonly, then you will be safe. Or, cheat by having INDEX ON...in the demo main PRG, so you will always have fresh indexes :)
I guess that's not too surprising to encounter more problems in the environments you mention. I'm on NT Server/95WS, and we are very robust in general. The network hardware/software has been tweaked for years by experts for this environment, and it's very strong.
Don't ask me about NTWS, though, that has been a disaster so far in testing here.
