Is .xls file in Excel5.0 format ? That's the only version AFAIK that doesn't have bugs with 'append from'. Also VFP6 SP3 has corrected some of the bugs.
'import from' might be a solution. Another one is to save as CSV, delimited or dBaseIII format from Excel.
