Both vbs and js files are real text files. It's the association to the WSH that actually controls their behavior when you double click them. See below.

The book might make it easier. As for the MSDN Library...it's free. One year of absolutely update documentation, plus the MS KB. Go get one. It's one of the most invaluable tools I've got.
