I hate those. The Dean's list one isn't so bad because you already have the coolness of being on the list whether you buy the book or not. But being told something as personal as poetry won a contest, only to find out it is a scam is really cruel.

There was someone on another forum I'm on (for FMS) that was so excited to have won some poetry contest. I didn't have the heart to tell her that odds are that everyone that entered "won".

>This is even worse.... My 10 year old daughter sent a poem into a "national" poetry contest and was judged to be a finalist in the competition. She was so thrilled and I cringed becasue, of course, there was an offer to buy a book of all the finalists poetry for $115.

>When we did not order the book we never heard another word! So this in not a victim-less crime from a money or an emotional standpoint.
