Sounds like the index is corrupted.

If you delete (move to a backup folder) the index, does it let you open the table?

Are you USEing a DBF or DBC? If it is a DBF and you have Excel, you can import the DBF into Excel and then export it as a DBF (without an index), then USE it and recreate the index. If the corruption is in the DBF, then you can try to correct it in Excel before exporting.
