Yes, but there can be multiuser considerations. Sometimes you have to bite it and go the slow route if other users could be on the system at the same time.

I've found that on slow networks in particular, the time required for importing 200,000 records (and updating say 4 or 5 index tags on each new row) is a lot more than the time required for importing without a reindex and then re-creating the tags. I first noticed this when I was involved in programming mass conversions of data into version 2.x tables, and with each subsequent upgrade, I have not found any difference in speed. The moral: definitely worth considering, and depending on hardware setup, may or may not make a difference.
