To All

I posted the following question on UT and John Petersen graciously responded. He asked me to post this here for all to see, since he doesn't frequent UT anymore. Hope this helps someone else. Thanks, John.

1. What software, etc. (beside the SQL 7.0) needs to reside on the server ?
RDS ? MDAC ?
<<

RDS is MDAC. And as such, it all needs to be on the server. RDS interacts
with IIS - and is a bitch to setup. But, once it is setup - it works like a
charm... If your WAN is not running on the Internet - you can use straight
ADO and TCP/IP.

<<
2. What software, etc. (besides our app) needs to be installed on the client
<<

You need MDAC on the clients...

<<
3. What impact is there (on the server side) of RDS in terms of security for
data on a shared (commercial) server ?
<<

You are only getting access to the SQL Server data - and that has its own
security...

<<
4. Is there any comprehensive list (or whatever) of properties/methods/etc.
of RDS (client) ?
<<

Check out the MDAC Docs.. Also, get a copy of the ADO 2.1 Programmers
Reference from Wrox...

<<
5. Does anyone has a source of sample code that I can look at to get some
ideas ?
<<

The Wrox books has some samples...

<<
6. Can you recommend articles/books/etc., such as yours that more
specifically target RDS ?
<<

The Wrox Book. Also, there is a book by Bill Martiner that is published by
Wiley..

<<
Any help you can offer will be most appreciated !
<<

Do me a favor since I don't go up on the UT anymore.. Make a quick post that
I addressed your issues. Let folks know that as far as their
ADO/VB/Office/COM questions are concerned - they can email me directly for
support...

Thanks and good luck...
