I tend to avoid the normal temp folder -it's sure to have tons of old deleted file entries which slow down directory operations. Make your own temporary folder for your application - cleaning it up after a crashwill be easy and if more than one hard disk is available the temp folder could be on a separate drive that Windows hasn't beaten up for its own work files.
