>>>I don't know if they don't understand it or don't teach about it. I personally don't believe that it's the function of higher education to teach you about "the real world". Of course, if you've never known anything other than academia, it's a bit tough to see beyond it.

>>What this professor was saying was that much of what you're taught in college doesn't apply to the real world. It's too much theory. I think the problem is that many college professors truely feel they are superior because they have a PhD. I agree with you that many of these guys see nothing but academia, which gives them a distorted view of the world. Nothing beats what you learn at OTJ Tech.

>In some instances I'll agree with you, Craig. In others, no. I don't think I'd be anywhere near as efficient with my coding if I hadn't gone back to college and taken the series of programming principles courses. I think, however, that the part of the problem is in following the principles blindly. Knowing when to "break the rules" can only come from good ole OTJ Tech. However, not knowing them at all, I think, is worse.

George,

A young man asked his Rabbi, "Rabbi, what is the modt important thing to gain in life?"

The Rabbi, after taking a moment of thought, replied, "Good Judgement."

The young man, impressed by this answer asked, "Rabbi, how does one then gain 'Good Judgement'?"

Stoking his beard for a moment the Rabbi responded, "Experience."

"Ahh, the young man thought. This is indeed a wise man", and then asked, "Rabbi, how does one gain this experience?"

The Rabbi, replied, "Bad Judgement."

<g>

May your days be full of Good Judgement.

A man is no fool who gives up that which he cannot keep for that which he cannot lose.
Everything I don't understand must be easy!
The difficulty of any task is measured by the capacity of the agent performing the work.
