Well, I'm entitled to call myself "Doctor" but in the real world, only pratts do that, the rest of us rely on the quality of our work to earn kudos.
In hiring staff, I do go for "lettered" if only because they have demonstrated the ability to stick at something for at least 3 years, have been asked by somebody apart from me to prepare documents with at least an attempt to click the "Spelling" or "Grammar checker" buttons, and generally have a debt that makes them keen not to flit around aimlessly. This used to be something you could take for granted but isn't among the bright young things these days.

"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
