>>>Now I'm surrounded by engineers for the first time ever. It's a pretty straight environment compared to software or science. So I know where all of you would have ended up if you had stayed. You might have had to come and go at precise hours and wear a tie.

>>>I think that, in the US, a lot of people end up programming because it's expanding, unlike the prospects for work related to science or defense (my current programming work for a defense contractor notwithstanding).

>>*I* think we all ended up in programming rather than engineering because we were all just slightly twisted. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! Besides, I absolutely HATE wearing a tie (Ouch! dangit i KNOW better than to try that at MY age!)

Oppsie......did I just date myself?? Well, I did start the University of Houston in '77

Yeah, in all reality, I did. Didn't last long in THAT world though. In fact, I was removed from a project (after I got it 98% finished) because the Manager of the office area that I was working out of "didn't think he could take me upstairs to talk to the engineers". I did point out that that shouldn't have worried him 'cuz the engineers were coming downstairs to talk to me (in the Accounting area of all places!). Found out later that the primary reason why he made the request was that I didn't dress 'feminine' enough for him and he thought I was gay and that made him just too uncomfortable. Oh well, his loss.
