>>Yeah, in all reality, I did. Didn't last long in THAT world though. In fact, I was removed from a project (after I got it 98% finished) because the Manager of the office area that I was working out of "didn't think he could take me upstairs to talk to the engineers". I did point out that that shouldn't have worried him 'cuz the engineers were coming downstairs to talk to me (in the Accounting area of all places!). Found out later that the primary reason why he made the request was that I didn't dress 'feminine' enough for him and he thought I was gay and that made him just too uncomfortable. Oh well, his loss.

>In Massachusetts in the late 60's (mini dress era) I got called on the carpet because my skirts were too short, and then nearly fired because I changed into a pants suit AFTER 5pm to drive 30 miles in a snowstorm. One of my neighbors threatened to sue her daughter's school, because they wouldn't let the little girl were ski-pants to school in sub-zero weather.

Dorris & Barbara: I have read your thread with great empathy and shared agnst - amongst other feelings - at the absurdities we face daily.

Coming late into this fray but not without my own collection of discrimination sagas, I am reminded of a situation, not too long ago, wherein I was actually encouraged to send my resume in to a situation which literally was tailor made for me from the standpoint of experience, education etc.. complete shoe in no less - huh! did not even get called for an interview yet someone else, of mutual acquaintance to me and the person making the recommendation yet who had not even worked in that particular field never mind not even having a comparable skill base, got invited for an interview. Go figure ... My problem? Simply that my resume showed my full name at the head of the page as "PATRICIA" instead of just the initial "P". "P" would probably have left them guessing till they met me. However, (quote -> Whoa, they said to themselves, it must be a WOMAN!!! look at the name. Don't even call her>>>> we might be in trouble here...... <- end quote). The good news came later when I found that had I actually gotten into that firm, it was so misogynistic and utterly chauvinistic that it would have been a miserable experience (an "engineering" company).

Oh the joys of being an educated woman just trying to be self-sufficient and independent in a world run by frightened, fragile-ego'ed inadequate men. Why can't they see that we can help them, and us, get far more ahead together by mutual collaboration than they ever will while they are divided against us? How is it that people like Clarence Thomas can be accepted in positions of authority after clearly demonstrating total unsuitability thereto?

oh well, at least I am not married to that awful guy on "Married With Children" (g) /psb.
