I've always developed for 800*600, but it's always been easier to implement as I've worked for larger businesses that have a very fixed Windows installation.

However, in the current position I'm in we sell applications, so we don't have the luxury. We still develop for a minimum 800*600, but we've got some form classes that allow a grid & all its objects to be sized proportionally to the screen size.

Personally, I hate it, as the objects look to big at 1024*768 & very small at 640*480.

However, I think the big difference to applications these days to those from the early to mid 90s is the Outlook style. ie some sort of tool bar on the left, a menu & toolbar on the top & the form area on the right. All the save & new options are at the top. Previously, we would have had the form in the centre, with a menu at the top. All the save & new buttons would have been at the bottom of the form.
