>>>I have a question about this: Does the law go both ways? Are businesses run by French speaking Quebecois forced to provide English language signs and stuff?
>
>>I'm not sure about this but I'd be surprised a lot if that would be the case. I think that this law was made to be sure that french is present everywhere. So it could be any language and french.

>Well, that's sort of dysfunctional IMHO. Anytime "heritage" type laws are passed anywhere, it simply means that businesses will avoid the area...
It really looks like we could argue undefinitely on that subject.
Economy is booming over here. Some estimates say that the province of Quebec could be the place economically in Canada in the coming years. Wired "the magazine" just said that Montreal was amongst the best places in the world for the IT industries. It's also been said that the "Plateau Mont-Royal" is the coolest place to live in the world.
Those laws are not perfect but we have to start somewhere. Refinements of these laws will make it easier for everyone to do business in the province of Quebec.
Businesses will avoid the area... What is your experience here? I think that in the short term it could hurt businesses but in the long run I don't see how it could hurt us.
