John....

>>All he is saying is that it is time to consider SQL Server. In the context, he is saying that if you have an aging Fox application that is subject to data corruption and data integrity problems, the time has come to consider SQL Server.

>>What is wrong with that statement?

It is half truth! It does not present what may be ( and probably is) his clients BEST interest... that is an objective look at ALL possible solutions. Ie.... the best tool for the job. Again, an attitude that you seem to demand of others.

>>I have always been a close reader, paying attention to detail. Law school has made me turn it up a few notches.

>>Please, lighten up. You like many, take this stuff at a personal level when you should not.

Well you need to read a LOT closer in my case. I don't take ANY of this personally! Note my reference to "this silly little letter".

My jumping into this was in direct response to your words of defense and a simple expression of my light hearted observation and opinion. Your response, which I quoted seems in direct contrast to other comments that you frequently make (ie... where is the proof... where are the benchmarks...etc) and which sometimes (but not always) have some validity.

>>Whatever... It is a marketing and sales piece.

Why then was it marketed to so many FOX developers? Humm... that does not strike you as worth thinking about? Surly a legal mind would want to investigate that! < s >

>>Tell me, how is this different than the scores of VFP developers who proclaim how superior DBF's are to SQL-Server?

It is not! I really did not claim that it was/is. That would also be half truth and just as wrong as any other half truth.

How can anyone make this claim..... of working is my clients BEST interest when they are promoting half truth? Ethics would demand a complete and honest presentation of facts to a client. I believe that when that is done on a consistant basis you (meaning anyone...not JVP) will be a winner. If you have to lie (half truth is a lie) to get business then it will at some time...come back to haunt you. (again.... anyone...not JVP)

(Again... just interesting rhetoric.... nothing personal and I'm not taking ANYTHING about this personally.)

>>Most of those folks have never worked with SQL. Yet, they condemn SQL.

You may be right...I could not say. For me, when I decided to come back to programming after a 7 year absence I started (and continue) with VFP becasue I worked primarily in dBase...Clipper... and Fox before I quit. However, I also
started learing... VB ( with DAO ADO and SQL)...Xml...Html...and now Java...realizing that it would probably make me a more marketable consultant. But right now my strength would be in VFP so that is my primary perspective.

>>If you are going to point the finger at this guy, you better start pointing the finger at others in this community who are guilty of the same thing you accuse this guy of having committed..

When and If "others" start marketing their services by veiled half truths about another product that they have no clue in (after all this is s Loust Notes shop for goodness sakes!) and they make direct email effort to Louts Notes developers... I will! < s >

>>Remember, the audience of this letter may be a non-technical person. First rule of writing, know your audience.

Then why did so many Fox developers get it???????????????

>>Obviously, this point was lost on you..< s >.. My guess is that your fear is that more than a few people will take what the guy has to say to heart...< vbg >..

I guess it was. < s > It seems it was lost on a lot of Fox Developers that also got the letter.

No fear here! < s > Someone much more important is in control of my future!

>>What half-truth has the guy perpetuated?

The way I see it with the assertion that.... my tools will never corrupt index files like Fox. That is half truth. Any system can have an index file corrupted. That is the full truth.

>Morality, ethics? Where does the guy miss the boat on that? Give me a break..

You may have a point...perhaps I overstated but I still contend that half truth is wrong and is just as bad as a lie. Also my response was more to your.... what is wrong with that comment that seemed to me to say that....anything is OK as far as going after clients is concerned.

Anyway, I won't take any more of your time. There are too many people that need your help with their important technical questions. < vbg >
