I remember when my older brother and his friends got me to jump off of the high dive as a child. I would imagine they too took a sort of perverse pleasure in watching me jump. I did - and survived, and I'm sure they enjoyed themselves too.....

On a more serious note: Often times those who are 'lurking' have every bit as much to offer as those who blithly play in the middle of the street. <g> It's just that they would prefer not to be harrassed if they goof up, a totally understandable emotional response. Quite mature actually and I've often wondered whether or not those of us who are more ...ehrrrhh.. active aren't the one who've been dropped on our collevtive heads once too often. <g>

Actually, when you get a chance to go to a DevCon or other regional event and meet these folks you will realize what a great bunch of nerds they are. <g>
